Assessment Analysis
Public awareness of the importance of behavioral health in schools has been increasing for nearly twenty years since the issue of bullying became recognized as a pervasive problem in schools, and as incidents of school violence involving firearms have increased in number and severity.
In addition, education professionals have known for decades that good mental health is necessary for efficient and high quality student learning. Further, mental health professionals have known for decades that mental health is a competency the acquisition of which can be accelerated through instruction, training, and practice.
Until recently, the response of school officials to aberrant behavior has been reactive in nature; taking action after the fact when disorder, violence, and shootings and violence occur. Many school districts have looked to prevention as a more effective method of intervention. The State of New York has taken a step forward by requiring mental health literacy to be included in the public school curriculum, and directing school systems to establish and administer curricula that is effective and appropriate within the community and culture of each local district.
Assessment Analysis Associates, LLC (AAA)
is well positioned to respond to the needs of school districts that are challenged by the changes required by Education Law §804. Limits in personnel, time, and resources are especially felt by many smaller districts in rural areas. AAA has a small staff of educational and mental health professionals who can assist school or district personnel with the tasks of determining need, designing curriculum, training staff, and assessing outcomes within the guidelines established by the State and within the culture, expectations and means of the local district.
